Colour Inspiration From Kate Spade New York

These images of the Kate Spade New York Spring 2013 Ready-To-Wear collection provide plenty of inspiration for those who love colour. There are some wonderful palettes within single garments and across the collection as a whole. It makes me want to colour-up my wardrobe dramatically!

Greeting Cards by Carrie May

Today I am inspired by these wonderful greeting cards by London-based designer Carrie May. I like her unusual colour palettes and the interesting textures within the illustrations.

The textures give the cards an antique feel, as if they have already been cherished and have been carefully stored away in tissue until now. Quite charming! You'll find these, and more of Carrie's exquisite work, at the Lagom Design store. While you are there, you may like to read a little information about Carrie May, artist and designer.

Alice + Olivia Spring 2013 Ready-To-Wear

I am often drawn to labels with a vintage edge, so it is no surprise that I am buzzing over Alice + Olivia by Stacey Bendet. In the Spring 2013 Ready-To-Wear collection the vintage influence is clear both in the garments and in the prints. Once again I find myself admiring simple yet strong designs such as stripes, geometrics, and bold florals. The scale of the prints in this collection varies greatly, as do the textures. Combined with elegant tailoring that is so flattering to the figure, it's easy to admire.

Head over to Style.com to read the review by Jessica Minkoff which reveals the inspiration behind the collection, and then take a look at the slideshow; it was extremely difficult to narrow down a few pieces to show when they were all so fantastic. Definitely my cup of tea!

Z Spoke by Zac Posen: Spring 2013 Ready-To-Wear

New York Fashion Week (September 6-13) is in full swing and there are some stunning images of all the Spring 2013 collections coming through on Style.com and other fashion sites. Looking at the coverage of some of the first shows I was struck by these images of Z Spoke by Zac Posen. The crisp, punchy prints and retro-styling appeal to me enormously, but I also love the way the lookbook images are presented on a clean white background allowing the prints and garments the focus they deserve. The excellent model, Coco Rocha, brings some wonderful personality and dynamics to the images.

In this image below, I love the dress and I LOVE the handbag!

The end result, is a label that has engraved itself into my mind, and I desperately want to wear it. That surely is the mark of a successful campaign! Postcards by Skinny laMinx

I always enjoy the newsletters I receive from Skinny laMinx. Perhaps it is because creator Heather Moore is absolutely consistent in creating strong, compelling graphics, and I can't recall a single design of hers that I haven't liked. She has just released some charming litho printed postcards that I would like to show today:

Artist Emma Gale - A Love of Pattern and Colour

The work of Emma Gale grabbed my attention today on Pinterest. It is the colour and texture within the work that excites me. Emma often creates a strong contrast, using black and white, from which colour pops out with intense vibrancy. These acrylic and/or mixed media pieces have so many interesting elements, patterns, and textures within them that it comes as no surprise to learn that Emma has a background in textile design.

Emma is an Australian artist who is based in Bangalow in Northern New South Wales. In her artist statement she begins:

My work demonstrates and celebrates a deep love of pattern and colour colliding with text and form. Inspiration comes from everywhere; objects that surround my daily life, thoughts that come into play, words that send a message or direct a theme, all draw my attention. I draw on a subject not simply to show its quirkiness or beauty but to tell of its existence. My work draws from the rural landscape igniting my imagination and creativity on a daily basis.

You can read the rest of Emma's artist statement at Anthea Polson Art, and you can view more of her work there too. To keep up with her news you may like to follow her on Facebook.

Mike's Visual Diary - Our Family Life

My eight-month old son has a clear favourite in the family. My partner Mike has been creating a visual diary for the kids as a way of recording some of these types of observations. Here is Mike's take on the situation:

Orla Kiely Autumn/Winter 12

There were a few excited, sharp intakes of breath from me as I explored the Orla Kiely Autumn/Winter 12 collection. There are certainly more than a few pieces I covet for my wardrobe, including a stunning Boucle Coat that I have fallen head-over-heels in love with. But the focus of my blog is surface pattern design, and there is no shortage of breathtaking design in that area either. Here are a few images that I love, featuring print designs, from the Orla Kiely Autumn-Winter 12 collection and lookbook:

There is a pain in my heart that my budget won't allow me to own all these beautiful things, but at least I have had the pleasure of a lengthy peruse! Don't pause another moment; hop over to the Orla Kiely website to see the entire collection which I guarantee is time well spent (and money well spent if you can!)
