The Fishing Trip by Béatrice Rodriguez

Following on from the success of The Chicken Thief and The Treasure Thief, we meet Chicken and Fox again for another wordless adventure - this time on the sea. There is no food for this soon-to-be family, so Chicken entrusts her beloved egg to Fox, and with crab for companionship she finds a quiet rock in a calm sea from which to cast her fishing line. Her delight at a large catch is short-lived as someone else is hungry too:

Or at least, her children are...

And so begins another surprising and suspenseful adventure. Chicken, never forgetting her family's needs, has to use all her strength and cunning to battle and ultimately thwart a fierce sea monster before safely delivering some much needed food to the table at home.

But what happened while Chicken was away?
Chicken is in for a shock on her arrival home, and there lies the climax of the story - a dramatic and unexpected twist, and a humorous conclusion that had me (and my partner too) laughing out loud.
Of the three books in the series, The Fishing Trip is my favourite. The narrative is both cute and clever, and the illustrations are wonderfully expressive and moody. A big thumbs up from me for sure!
